Arlene Shechet: Girl Group
Storm King Art Center has published a richly illustrated catalogue to accompany the central exhibition of its 2024 season: an indoor-outdoor presentation of works by Hudson Valley, NY-based artist Arlene Shechet (b. 1951). Arlene Shechet: Girl Group brings together the artist’s recent work in wood, steel, ceramic, paper, and bronze with six new monumental sculptures created for Storm King Art Center. The exhibition centered on the translation of Shechet’s lyrical ceramics into robust, large-scale painted metal sculptures, an ambitious new body of work that expands upon the artist’s intuitive and handmade approach. Through her signature emphasis on process and improvisation, Shechet harnesses the expressive power of geometry, line, color, and form in works displayed across Storm King’s hills, fields, and galleries.
The book features essays by the exhibition’s curators Nora Lawrence and Eric Booker, as well as contributions by Kate Nesin, Anne Reeve, and Sheena Wagstaff, that situate the artist’s work within a career defined by constant discovery. Designed by Other Means, the publication captures Shechet’s exhibition through vibrant fabrication and installation photography, as the artist explores a new direction within the tradition of constructed metal sculpture.
